Leona Maguire joined Marina Alex at the top of the leaderboard after the second round of the Drive On Championship in Florida on Friday.

Irish golfer Maguire posted a seven-under par score of 65, including three consecutive birdies and another on the 18th, to match her 66 from Thursday’s opening round, equaling Alex’s first-round total.

The 27-year-old admitted she had little idea how she would compare to the rest of the field in the second lap, but was happy not to have that in the back of her mind.

“The first scoreboard I saw was on the 16th, but other than that there aren’t any scoreboards out here – which isn’t a bad thing,” Maguire said.

“I kinda feel like we went back to what it was like in college when there weren’t any leaderboards and I never knew where I was and I’m not going to look at leaderboards on Saturday, I’m just going to try to post a number.

“It’s just going to be more of the same I think; just be patient and take my chances when I get them.”

Alex, meanwhile, carded a six-under-par 66 in her second round to go with her 65 on day one, putting the pair four shots clear of the rest of the field after 36 holes with 131.

The American finished her round with two birdies to secure part of the clubhouse lead, while Maguire headed into the final day despite admitting it had been a long, tiring round.

“It’s flowing, which is great,” Alex said. “I’m a bit exhausted and lost some steam but I was happy to finish birdie, birdie.

“We’re just going to go out there and play a good round on Saturday and see what happens.”

Brittany Altomare, Stacy Lewis and Linnea Johansson are a trio of players in third place out of nine. Lexi Thompson, Jeongeun Lee6 and Patty Tavatanakit are another shot behind and sit sixth.
